I am designing a speech timer for use in toastmasters. I have only attended a handful of meetings so I thought it would be an interesting experiment to blog about the design and solicit comments. Sort of like the early days of the internet when researchers would issue a Request For Comments which would later become a formal specification.
After a few days or maybe a week I will post the new specs taking into account features and ideas suggested in the comments here. I suppose you could say I’m looking for evaluators!
Here are the initial specifications. If there are multiple specs on one line separated by commas the first item is the one I’m considering and the others are listed as alternatives in no particular order.
- battery powered, wall adapter?, rechargeable?
- LCD display (like calculator), LED display? (like alarm clock), Vacuum Fluorescent? (like microwave)
- 3.5 digits e.g. 18:88, more digits?, alphanumeric?
- 2 buttons [Select/Reset] and [Start/Stop], (see operation description below)
- fixed choices for duration, programmable durations?
- vertical “pole” with illuminated red-yellow-green sections, other arrangements or illumination?
- 6″ tall
- folds flat, some other form that might be bulkier but easier to construct?
- any other ideas ??
Operation would be as follows:
Step 1, Press the [Select/Reset] button to cycle through common speech times e.g. 1:2 (1 to 2 minutes), 4:6 (4 to 6 minutes), 7:9… suggested display could go up to 19:99 (although I suppose 19:21 would make more sense). Stop when desired time is displayed.
Step 2. Press the [Start/Stop] button to begin timing.
Elapsed time will be displayed and green light will automatically illuminate at minimum time, yellow half way between minimum and maximum time, red at maximum time.
Step 3. Press the [Start/Stop] button to stop timer. May be stopped and started throughout speech to allow for interruptions, questions etc. Record speaker’s time.
Step 4 Press [Select/Reset] to reset timer and select next speech time.
Any and all comments are welcome. If you think it would be cool if it flipped up like a cell phone, or if it’s disguised as a flower arrangement, or beeps when you are at maximum time, or at max plus 30 seconds or it says, “TIMES UP!!” or… I would love to hear your ideas.
Just type your comments in the “Leave A Reply” box below and then click on “Post My Comment”. P.S. The Username can just be your name, nickname etc. you do not need any kind of account. The email field is required but will not appear in the post and will NOT be shared.
specifications that have already been suggested! Just so you don’t have to scour the comments to find them. Also, some have been sent via email or given in person.
- Programmable speech times
- Audible alert
- wireless link between timer and indicator lights so lights could be placed in a more visible location
- Memory for storing speech times tagged with category such as speaker, TT, Evaluator

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackTanda, great idea! Here are some of the time options that should be considered. Table Topics: 1 – 2 minutes; G @ 1; Y @ 1.5, and R @ 2.
Speech evaluations: 2 – 3 minutes; G @ 2, Y @ 2.5, R @ 3.
Ice breaker: 4 – 6 minutes: G @ 4, Y @ 5, R @ 6.
Standard Speech: 5 – 7 minutes; G @ 5, Y @6, R @ 7.
However, Speech # 10 in the CC manual is 8 – 10 minutes and many of the Advanced Manual Speeches are 15 to 20 minutes. Would be nice to have a feature where user can program manually varying speech times.
Tanda, Great idea. You make mention in the paragrapgh just below the heading, “Operation would be a s follows” ” suggested display could go up to 19:99 (although I suppose 19:21 would make more sense). Why 19:21?
Would it be possible to put in a time and then repeat that time over and over, such as with TT?
I like it.
Hey Dan, The 19:99 is simply because the LCD display I happened to be looking at using has 3.5 digits. This means the first digit can only be a one (1) and the other three can be any number. If all segments were turned on it would look like 18:88. My comment on 19:21 was just my commentary on the fact that a 19 to 99 minute speech would be a bit odd! So I was suggesting a 19 to 21 minute speech might be a more realistic example.
Dan, Good point in regard to repeating the same time over and over such as in TT. I would program it so that when you pressed [Select/Reset] after timing a given speech the first option presented would be whatever you had just previously timed so you would be ready to just press [Start/Stop] again for the next speaker.
If you are more the mechanical/artsy type and would like to comment on the form rather than the function here are links to a couple pics to get you thinking. The first is a whiteboard doodle and the second is a light pole concept made from PVC pipe fittings and acrylic disks. The disks would light up green, yellow and red of course.
Just received an email with regard to the cost to the club. I am not looking to get paid for this development work. This is an exercise for me in developing a product based on my blog reader’s input. If a viable product results I may make and sell them. It is after all what my company does. However, Vanguard Technology will front the cost of initial development and donate serial #1 to my club.
Tanda,
Neat idea/initiative. Rather than echo what’s been previously posted I’ll merely add that, under separate cover, I’ll forward an existing Toastmasters (electronic) timing tool that you may want to evaluate as you move forward with your design specs. No sense in completely reinventing the wheel unless, of course, your wheel is even better!

Tanda, “wut (s)he said”! Wow! I like both the vertical, “stoplight” design and the horizontal. I followed the links for the design and got an error message, “the attachment have been removed”. It does need to “collapse” somehow to be of ultimate service, due to the load the Sgt. at Arms already totes in and out of each meeting. This is great, and thank you for taking it on for 6504. Karen
Eric, thanks for the input. The program file was stripped from my email for security reasons but I found it online. That’s just what I’m looking to do only in a portable electronic version instead of needing a PC. Yes, I know there are electronic ones out there too. I’m not inventing anything I just thought it would be fun to come up with our own design. I’m actually as interested in experimenting with online product development as the timer itself.
Karen, You are right we do need to keep it small and portable and at the same time make it so that everyone at the meeting can see it.
Thanks, for the info on the links. They were somewhat ephemeral. They worked for me until I logged out and back in. They should work again now. The “doodle” is of the same device folded closed and then opened. The PVC was just me playing with ideas. (Trivia, the orange pen is from Spam-A-Lot in NYC what fun!!!)
Tanda, great idea!!. What about 4 speech registers and 8 TT registers to keep the times in memory. Is this a bell or a whistle?
Steve, it may be a bell or a whistle but maybe a good one to add. It would require a bit more complicated interface but certainly doable. Maybe a [Memory] button to scroll through previous times. Maybe [M+] and [MR] type buttons for adding to memory and recalling like a calculator. Separate buttons/memories for speakers, TT, and evaluators? I will add a paragraph of suggested additional specifications.
Great idea. Having some preset options along with the option to enter manually would be helpful. Small and portable, yet big enough to see is important. Having a report function – to click on at the end of the meeting – will be nice. I like the idea of being able to start / stop the timer.
For additional ideas, you may want to check out a fellow in FL that created a computer-based timer. http://www.martinz.net/ (click on My Stuff, then TimeToaster).
Can’t wait to see your prototype.

Well, it appears the comments on the speech timer have about run their course. I will begin digging around my lab for the various parts and putting something together. A project I’m in the middle of right now has a microcontroller with 4 LEDs and 4 buttons so all I really need to add is the display and a beeper to start playing with the programming.
I will try to post some early development pictures and specs and ask for comments once I get started.
I think i’ve seen this somewhere beforeā¦but it’s not bad at all
Derekp, It’s by no means a new idea. I was just interested in exploring online blog based design specification and thought it would be fun if people got to participate in the design. Instead of donating my time and materials to build one I could have just donated the money to buy one but where’s the fun in that!
We had one at my club in San Antonio. I am in a new club in St. Louis and have looked on line. What Atztex (sp?) offers is generic and expensive and doesn’t use the TM standard (no lights to qualified time, yellow 30 second before max, red at max), rather it starts on green. My search lead me to believe that our Toastmasters timer was custom built.
Let me know when you have your specs and costs. If you’re already at the production mode, please contact me quickly.
Thanks.
Ron
